Tallow Candles
Hand-poured on the farm.
In addition to purchasing Back Forty Beef for your family dinners now you can use our products to decorate your home. Back Forty Candles are hand poured using beef tallow from our own homegrown beef on our South Dakota farm. As soybean farmers, we are excited to add American grown soy wax to each of our candles as well. Our ingredients are simple; beef tallow, soy wax, essential oils and high quality fragrances.
Why choose tallow and soy wax candles?
For thousands of years, beef tallow (fat) has been used to make candles. However, candles found in the store today often are made with paraffin wax, mainly because paraffin candles are cheaper to make and easier to work with. While these candles may be cheaper they are synthetic and include many chemicals in their ingredients.
Tallow and soy wax are co-products of producing beef and soybeans. Coming from renewable natural resources makes them environmentally friendly and a healthy option to burn in your home.
Here are a few candle-burning tips to extend the life of your Back Forty Tallow Candle.
Allow your candle to reach a full melt pool during every burn. A melt pool is where the wax is completely melted around the whole diameter of the jar. This will ensure a clean, even burn for the life of your candle.
After use, trim your wick to 1/4 inch to prevent smoking, and soot build-up, to ensure an even burn.
Do not exceed the recommended burn time of 3-4 hours at a time.
Do not leave your burning candle unsupervised.
Your jar is reusable! Once finished, pop the wick out of the bottom of your jar. Remove the remaining wax and place the jar in the dishwasher to clean and sanitize. This is for the jars only. Dough bowls and beaded bowls should not go in the dishwasher. Please gently wipe the wax out of those. Reuse however you like for years to come! We will soon offer refills if you would like to continue burning in your bowl.

Disclaimer: Each candle is hand-poured meaning there may be variations in the amount, look and texture of the wax, making each candle its own unique item.
Caution: Failure to follow instructions could result in fire hazard, injury, or smoke damage. Keep wax free of matches, wick trimmings, or other flammable materials. Keep wick centered & trimmed to 1/4 in. to prevent smoking & soot build up on container or other items. Burn only on a stable heat-resistant surface for not more than 4 hours at a time. Keep out of drafts. Discontinue use when only 1/2 in. of wax remains in the bottom. Do not move candle while burning or if the wax is hot. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
